Carr Family
The Carr family line goes back from Ann Maria Carr who married Ernest Edward Arrow (pictured at right). She was born in Staffordshire in 1880, but the family left when she was just a few months old to live in Highbrooms, Tonbridge, Suffolk. Her mother died when she was 5-years-old and her stepmother was very cruel. Maria worked in a laundry at age 11 doing ironing. Her life turned around when she met and married Ernest Arrow. They had daughter Queenie when she was 21. She had a very fulfilling life and was a much loved and adored mother and grandmother. She was called "Dada" by her granddaughter Phyllis. Her children spoke of their childhood with only the fondest of memories. Though Queenie said that she disliked the name given to her and later changed it to Joan. Both Maria and Ernest were spoken of only with the most affection.
Maria had two bouts with rheumatic fever and two strokes. After her second stroke one arm and leg were paralyzed and one side of her face was crooked. When she discovered this, she massaged it with talcum powder and was able to work it back into place. She eventually died of a heart attack at the age of 68. Queenie Joan Arrow Hedger
Ann Maria was the daughter of John and Maria (Ward) Carr. Maria died in 1885, and in December 1886 John married Jane Caroline Page. Family stories report that the daughters of Maria were not treated well by Jane Caroline. She and John went on to have 6 or 7 more children. John worked as a Brickmaker, having been born in Padbury, Buckinghamshire. This is where his father Henry was born and married his mother Ann Miller.
